[LISTEN UP] NICOLAS JAAR & THEATER ROOSEVELT - THE EGO

On the craziest, most ludicrous shopping day of the year in America, Nicolas Jaar dropped a free, slick, dubby track on his label’s Clown and Sunset Soundcloud. “The Ego” features Jaar’s nocturnal electronic work underneath a monologue from a voice known as Theater Roosevelt, or “Teddy’s ghost”. The deep voice culls together what appear to be soundbites from the 2012 Election in a thick Jamaican accent, which is probably the most fun you’ll ever have while hearing the words “a-let Detroit go bankrupt.” Check out the track below.

WU LYF BREAKS UP... POSTS FAREWELL TRACK

WU LYF is apparently no more. Last night, the band uploaded a new song to YouTube, titled "T R I U M P H" (listen below), beneath which members of the band described how this was the end. Frontman Ellery James Roberts wrote:

"By the time I wrote this I was all ready gone. You know you aint got nothing but time, but time isn't an infinite currency I want to see wasted. If this is our last month living, apocalypse looming, I am not going to spend my final hours waiting in purgatory. I am done. There is nothing here that inspires/ interests me beyond the emptiness for dreams. and I don't want to spend my life asleep; dreaming of a....

"Wake up! We stay safe/ everything is golden/ in this place.

"WU LYF is dead to me. The sincerity of "Go tell fire" was lost in the bull shit of maintaining face in the world we live. Clap your hands chimp everybody's watching. A year spent losing faith; Innocence lost wide eyes see clear the dark. There's blood running down streets of every city in the world, what's a song to do, pretend it mean everything/nothing to you. Another distraction from the world we live. I and I struggle for a based positivity; Get free or die trying; J C Hung him self up for the easy way out. so Broken Mama Cita be kind to me."

CHROMATICS RELEASE RUNNING FROM THE SUN [KILL FOR LOVE SESSIONS]

Jet lagged & buzzing from Friday's show in Paris, I couldn't sleep...so I stayed up all night with Oko talking about color based dreams while blending these tracks together. Since the album came out, a lot of people on the road have been telling us they are curious to hear some of the unreleased music from the Kill For Love sessions...Recorded November 2009 through December 2011, these songs were all mixed between 4 & 6 a.m. After hours of tracking at the studio in Montreal, we'd clear the channels on the mixer, open a bottle of wine, & feel around in the dark...working our way through the atmospheric elements & peeling back layers of rhythm...throwing the songs into the abstract pile & playing them while driving home in the snow. In Amsterdam right now trying to upload it from the hotel. Fingers crossed...

This is a lullaby for you...
Sweet Dreams!

[ALBUM REVIEW] SIC ALPS - SIC ALPS

Sic Alps
have always managed to maintain a wonderful garage sound, and with their new self-titled album out now on Drag City, they only continue to get stronger. Vocals have more clarity and songs gravitate toward a junkyard Big Star style… producing a satisfying combination of 60's noise and 70's pop-rock. Strings and piano are weaved throughout the tracks adding an extra punch to intros and interludes. Opening number, "Glyphs", opens with violin- and later, mixes both violin and cello with lovely grungy noise, making me wish I had spare change to give to this talented hobo band. (Sorry, They aren't real hobos. They probably live in decent apartments and can afford to shop at Whole Foods.) Most of their songs, past and present, follow a mellow path, so when a track like "Moviehead" plays, I'm always giddy. This happy-go-lucky song has a psychedelic riff paired with a bubblegum beat that could easily fit in with any Nuggets compilation, which isn't the first song they've ever written to do so and I am not complaining. There are slower times on the album, "Lazee Son" sounds just as lazy as the title, but the length of the songs remain short and then it's back on the right track. At times I wonder if they will ever head in a new direction musically, but let's not jinx it and ruin a good thing.
