Record Store Day is proud to announce the appointment of IGGY POP to the post of Record Store Day 2012 Ambassador.

A person should have a personality. You won't get one dicking around on a computer. It helps to go somewhere where there are other persons. Persons who are interested in something you are. That's how a record store or any shop that's got some life to it should work. It's not about selling shit. I got my name, my musical education and my personality all from working at a record store during my tender years. Small indie shops have always been a mix of theater and laboratory. In the 50's and 60's the teen kids used to gather after school at these places to listen free to the latest singles and see if they liked the beat. You could buy the disc you liked for 79 cents and if you were lucky meet a chick. Clerks in these places became managers, (like Brian Epstein), label heads, (Jack Holzman) and Faces on album covers (like me). Personally I feel best in a store that, while staying small and socially relaxed, still keeps a complete variety of music types and non musical recordings on offer. I'm aware though that a lot of great places are genre-specific, like dance hall shops in Jamaica or Compas here in Little Haiti. In Europe and on the West coast the same goes on for Punk and Goth. All of this is cool and has a much bigger future than most people realize today. When the record and record store businesses began to die at the turn of the new century, they deserved it because they got too big too boring and too plastic. As Record Store Day Ambassador for 2012 I feel like a representative from some exotic jungle full of life and death and sex and anger, called upon to wear a leopard skin and translate joy to the world of the dead.

[ALBUM REVIEW] LANA DEL REY - BORN TO DIE

Despite all the internet hype, Lana Del Rey is just a gif on your tumblr dashboard. She's like a pretty actress who woke up one day deciding to make a pop album (Scarlett Johansson, anyone?), and it would be more enjoyable had the record belonged to such a genre of wannabes. The production is well done with beats and string arrangements that make tracks such as "Diet Mountain Dew" and "Radio" worth a listen. Unfortunately, Miss Rey doesn't take any risks and with little connection to the music, leaves us dragging along--almost wanting to help her create something better in the future. Until then, I plan to ignore her wallpaper music the next time I'm eating a Panera bread bowl.

[ALBUM REVIEW] THURSTON MOORE - DEMOLISHED THOUGHTS

At first listen “Demolished Thoughts” sounds like a lost Warren Zevon album that somehow found its way into Ennio Morricone’s hands. But upon further inspection the intricacies become much more apparent. Subtle guitar licks, violin, and an inconspicuous harp create a somber yet beautiful sound-scape throughout most of this record. Moore has steered from his noise rock/pop roots before, but the violin allows for much more depth and emotion. Beck Hansen’s influence is lightly marked, but can be heard in some of the western influenced arrangements and clean production style. However, it never becomes lost on you that this indeed is a Thurston Moore record. Some of his chord choices, guitar style, and subdued vocals in “Orchard Street” could be lifted straight from the low-key Sonic Youth playbook. But this only remains a small part of the song; as the rest continues you forget you’re listening to Moore and start to wonder when the movie credits are going to begin. This brings me to a rather defining point of the record: The violin is the real star. Although Moore conjures some beautiful vocal melodies, violinist Samara Lubelski remains upfront, reminding you it isn’t all about Thurston. I liked this album very much, and I recommend you go out and buy it on May 24th, have a glass of wine, stare out your window and think about the good times.
