GUIDED BY VOICES – FOREVER SINCE BREAKFAST (I WANNA RECORDS) 1986

“It’s been a long, long, long, long, long, long time…”. In fact, it has been quite some time since Guided By Voices released their debut EP Forever Since Breakfast (27 years to be exact). I distinctly remember putting this record on at my apartment and my roomate’s brother asking me if I was listening to R.E.M. The opening track, Land of Danger, totally shreds. The vocals are catchy and actually do sound a little like Michael Stipe. “Let’s Ride” is not as catchy, but has a playful innocence to it. The chorus is pretty cool, with a little guitar refrain that frames it nicely. “Like I do” is an acoustic number I do not really care for, but then “Sometimes I Cry” picks the record right the fuck back up with a clear, obvious influence by The Who. It’s awesome and catchy as hell.

I’m going to stop here and say two things… 1. The guitar sound on the record gets a little tiring. There isn’t really any variation, and you get the feeling you’re listening to the same chords over and over again. 2. That being said, the songs are very well written and super catchy. You can easily see the seed of indie rock planted with influences from R.E.M., Wire, and The Who. I can picture beer bellied guys in Ohio in 1986 who love drinking PBR and head banging to Zeppelin being totally into this record. The rest of the EP is really good, but I’m going to let you find that out on your own. If you like indie rock, classic rock, or GBV, this is one you should check out.

[PREVIEW] ZOMBI AT EMPTY BOTTLE THIS FRIDAY NOVEMBER 29TH

After their previous stint opening up for Goblin (Suspiria soundtrack masterminds), Zombi has returned to headline the empty bottle this Friday. Zombi has managed to pull off a space rock, anthemic sounding show that will most likely hypnotize you into some kind of trance. Using only bass, drums, and a bunch of analog synthesizers, these guys will make you feel like you are on Mars! No joke. And it's beautiful. Steve Moore and A.E. Paterra, the masterminds and multi-instrumentalists behind Zombi, are incredibly talented fellows. Why they are playing the bottle and not writing scores for David Lynch films is beyond me, so you should really check these guys out. This past September, Rathborne released Soft, an 11-track debut album... Now, the New York City foursome lead by singer-guitarist Luke Rathborne, bassist Darren Will, drummer Jamie Alegre, and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Giannopoulos just released the video for the title track "Soft". The video is directed by Jack Schurman, and features Luke singing and playing guitar with some tripped out psychedelic visuals. The album is out now on True Believer and is available via I-Tunes HERE. The guys are also currently on the road and have a string of shows lined up alongside Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr., who mixed and co-produced the album "Soft with Gus Oberg.

[LISTEN UP] TEMPLES - MESMERISE

Temples just announced the forthcoming new single 'Mesmerise' from the bands eagerly anticipated debut album 'Sun Structures'. In the UK it will be released by Heavenly Recordings on February 10th 2014 and February 11th in the US by Fat Possum. The 12-track album was self-produced by the band’s James Bagshaw and mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer. VIDEO: BLOOD ORANGE - TIME WILL TELL

“Time Will Tell” is the closing track from the album CUPID DELUXE. The song itself was recorded live in a one take that lasted about 15 minutes I ad-libbed the vocals recalling lyrics from songs of mine and a song by Adam Bainbridge (which he was unaware i was going to do). Adam was on the drum machine, Blue May on guitar, Sam Beste on piano, & Tawiah on backing vocals. I then took some of my vocals from towards the end and overlaid it as a backing vocal."
